Cardinal Sandri and Apostolic Nuncio Visit Tantur

Author: Dan Koski

On November 26th, 2018, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation of Oriental Churches, accompanied by Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to Israel and Apostolic Delegate to Palestine, paid a visit to Tantur in the course of his pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the weeks immediately following the canonization of Pope St. Paul VI.  The Cardinal wished to honor St. Paul VI’s historic pilgrimage to the Holy Land which resulted in the founding of three institutions that continue in their mission to this day:  Bethlehem University, the Ephpheta Paul VI Institute, and the Tantur Ecumenical Institute.

Addressing the Tantur community, His Eminence encouraged the scholars, fellows, continuing education program participants and Notre Dame students gathered in the Chapel Seminar Room in their efforts to realize greater mutual understanding and respect across ecclesiastical and faith boundaries.  On behalf of the Tantur community, Fr. Russ McDougall presented His Eminence with an icon in thanks for his visit.  The Cardinal and his delegation then joined the community in a celebration of evening prayer, followed by a festive dinner.

Photos of the visit are available on our Facebook page.
